CaribPR Wire, NEW YORK, NY, Oct. 10 2017: Renowned Grammy-nominated, Jamaican jazz great, Monty Alexander, has taken his brand of jazz to fans around the world. But this month he returns to Upstate New York for a performance at the famous Jazz Forum.

Alexander, who has been presented with the Commander In The Order Of Distinction for outstanding service to his homeland as a worldwide music ambassador, is set to bring his one-of-a-kind jazz to fans in Tarry Town, NY.

The maestro, who has made his mark on the jazz music scene for his unique infusion of traditional jazz and reggae – the music of his homeland – will play at one of the country’s premiere not-for-profit jazz venues from Friday, October 20 to Saturday, October 21, 2017. Alexander will play two shows on both nights – at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., respectively.

Tickets are US $30 per night and can be purchased by selecting the day of attendance in the calendar here and clicking the Buy Tickets button.

ABOUT ALEXANDER

Alexander is one of the most sought after jazz pianists in the world and is ranked in the top five in ‘The Fifty Greatest Piano Players of All Time.’ Soon after moving to the U.S. from his native Jamaica, his amazing talent caught the ears of Frank Sinatra and Jilly Rizzo, and he was hired as house pianist at Jilly’s, New York City’s famed club, where he worked with some of the top names in jazz. Fifty-five years after he moved to the United States from Kingston, Jamaica, he has become an American classic. Alexander is also mentioned in Robert Doerschuk’s 88: The Giants of Jazz Piano. He gives the hardcore-jazz-obsessed much to dig into while also communicating the message to the squarest “civilian.”

Whether playing straight jazz, Jamaican Reggae, Soul, or the music of his idols, Nat ‘King’ Cole and Frank Sinatra, Alexander’s energy and vibrancy, coupled with his musical prowess on the piano, will astound fans anywhere. He tours the world relentlessly with various projects, delighting a global audience drawn to his effervescent personality and soulful message. His spirited conception is one informed by the timeless verities: endless melody-making, effervescent grooves, sophisticated voicings, a romantic spirit, and a consistent predisposition. As Alexander, himself, sums it up: “To build up the heat and kick up a storm.”

My Haiti Travels_logo

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CaribPR Wire, NEW YORK, NY, Tues. Oct. 10, 2017: My Haiti Travels, a New York-based boutique concierge firm that produces high-quality leisure and business travel experiences with a social impact, announced its 5th Anniversary “Impact Week” signature trip to Haiti scheduled January 11-18, 2018. From the rich culture and historic monuments to stunning landscapes and intoxicating beaches, the My Haiti Travels package offers an unforgettable tour across multiple destinations, including Port-au-Prince, Petion-Ville, Cotes des Arcadins and Cap-Haitien, including a not-to-be-missed visit to the 19th-century Citadelle, a universal symbol of liberty and one of the most extraordinary wonders of the world.

Since launching in 2010, My Haiti Travels has been hailed as a top tourism influencer attracting groups of travelers seeking a vibrant cultural adventure in Haiti. The 5th Anniversary “Impact Week” itinerary will include epic excursions with professional guides in private transport to notable landmarks, dining at top restaurants, live music and entertainment, shopping at artisan shops and more. Guests will also enjoy deluxe boutique hotel and beach resort stays at two locally owned properties – the renovated Kinam Hotel in Petion-Ville, an upscale suburb of the nation’s capital Port-au-Prince, and the scenic Moulin Sur Mer resort on the Arcadins Coast, a sought-after Caribbean beach destination.

Back by popular demand, My Haiti Travels will visit Cap-Haitien, Haiti’s second largest city located in the north. As an exceptional highlight of the trip, guests will travel mountain top on horseback to the Citadelle, the largest fortress in the Americas and a World Heritage Site officially recognized by the United Nations.

The My Haiti Travels agency was founded by Haitian-born Dina Simon shortly following the devastating earthquake of January 2010 to support the resurgence of tourism and investment in Haiti, and to promote the patronage of local businesses, hotel/resort establishments and restaurants. My Haiti Travels staff continues to build relationships and work diligently with local professionals and experts across Haiti’s hospitality and tourism sector to provide safe, meaningful and fun experiences.

“Whether you are a first-time visitor or frequent traveler, My Haiti Travels’ fifth anniversary Impact Week is a life-changing opportunity to see Haiti through our eyes,” said Dina Simon, founder and managing director, My Haiti Travels. “My Haiti Travels has spent years building strong relationships with hotel properties, artisans, business owners and local partners allowing us to offer clients a high quality experience at competitive rates. We are so very proud to have helped lead the way for many others to see Haiti as a tourist destination.”

As part of the “Impact Week” tour, each year travelers spend a day at a school participating in skill building youth projects to commemorate the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday celebrated in the U.S. The 2018 “Impact Week” will feature Project Day for the fifth year to provide volunteer services to students of PRODEV’s (Progress and Development through the Youth of Haiti) Ecole Nouvelle Zoranje in the Village de La Renaissance. Established in 1995 to empower the youth of Haiti through education, PRODEV is a Haitian-led non-profit, non-political foundation officially recognized by the government of Haiti. “Impact Week” travelers continue to be involved in meaningful ways, such as providing supplies, donating technical equipment to students, conducting fundraisers and starting new education programs in Haiti. The 2018 Project Day will be especially significant for participants as it coincides with the date of the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

“My Haiti Travels and its wonderful travelers have been coming to Ecole Nouvelle Zoranje and their day of service is highly anticipated by children and staff. When a group of young Haitian Americans and friends of Haiti arrive on our school campus, they bring hope, a can-do attitude and more importantly serve as great role models to our children,” said Maryse Pénette-Kedar, PRODEV board president. “We are truly honored to host MHT’s visits and look forward to more. Happy 5th Anniversary MHT!”

Since its inaugural group trip in 2013, through its “Impact Week” tour, “Jacmel Getaway” voyage and other custom expeditions, My Haiti Travels has served hundreds of travelers in support of hotels, drivers, airlines, restaurants, shops and artisans operating in Haiti. Ranging in age from teen agers to baby boomers, the diverse travel groups hail from all professions and cultural backgrounds seeking to explore Haiti’s dynamic Taino, African, Latin and French ancestry.

Media partners of the 5th Anniversary 2018 “Impact Week” tour include Belle Vue Tours; Chokarella; Haiti Cultural ExchangeHaitian Businesses; Haitians Rock by Ronald Timmer; Kreyolicious; Manman Pemba; and The Haitian Roundtable.

UVI RTPark Program Launches Donation Appeal To Support Fund For The U.S. Virgin Islands

FacebookTwitterGoogle+Share

CaribPR Wire, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Oct. 6, 2017: The University of the Virgin Islands RTPark, (UVI RTPark), the Specialist Economic Development Program, has launched a special donation appeal to support the Fund For the U.S. Virgin Islands on the heels of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

The RTPark’s own headquarters on St. Croix suffered significant exterior and interior damage from Hurricane Maria on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 with the building losing its decorative winged roof and suffering tremendous water damage to its offices.

But despite its loss, the RTPark as a good corporate citizen is pitching in to help by supporting the FUND FOR THE VIRGIN ISLANDS, (FFVI), which has been set up by the non-for-profit organization, the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, (CFVI), in collaboration with USVI Delegate to Congress, Hon. Stacey Plaskett.

The RTPark’s immediate goal is to provide financial support for the critical needs of U.S. Virgin Islands residents impacted by both Hurricanes Irma and Maria. These needs include:

·         Water

·         Food Supplies

·         Clean-Up Supplies

·         Batteries, Lanterns

·         Diapers

·         Baby formula

·         Tarpaulins

Please support this effort by contributing a donation here.

The devastation wreaked by Hurricanes Irma and Maria provides a unique opportunity for the US Virgin Islands and the wider Caribbean region to build capacity and undertake a major program in smart, green resilient technology,” said Executive Director Dr. Gillian Marcelle. “The RTPark is ready to make a major contribution to this effort as a knowledge hub that brings together the impact investment community, the private sector, governments and the academic community.”

C. Knox LaSister, CEO, Smart, Inc. added that the islands of the Caribbean, including the U.S. Virgin Islands, must look at making improvements such as: enhancing building codes, changing infrastructure requirements to respond to need for more resilient structural integrity; improved power generation and management systems and smart water distribution management systems.

“The UVI RTPark headquartered in St. Croix is the perfect hub for generating this kind of innovative and strategic thinking; we can find creative and effective solutions necessary in this new environment,” he added.

Flow and CaribbeanTales Present World Premiere of Caribbean Television Pilots at CaribbeanTales International Film Festival 2017

FacebookTwitterGoogle+Share

CTFF Legacy

CaribPRWire, Toronto Canada, Sat. Sept. 9, 2017: Three new, original Caribbean TV pilots have their world premiere screenings at the 12th CaribbeanTales International Film Festival (CTFF) in Toronto, Canada, this September. BattleDream Chronicles, an Animated TV Show, HEAT, and CaribbeanGrlNYC are the result of an ongoing partnership between the CaribbeanTales Media Group, the world’s largest distributor of Caribbean audio-visual content, and Flow, the Caribbean’s leading telecoms and media content provider.

Produced by CaribbeanTales for Flow, the three pilots will air exclusively on Flow’s flagship entertainment network, Flow 1, later this year across the Caribbean.

HEAT-Final-Poster2

The pilots focus on Caribbean themed content: BattleDream Chronicles is the Region’s first Afro-futurist Animation series created by director, producer and writer Alain Bidard; HEAT is a steamy Bajan drama written and directed by internationally acclaimed Barbadian/British director and writer Menelik Shabazz; while CaribbeanGrlNYC by Guadeloupean creator and director Mariette Monpierre, — best known for her award-winning 2011 film, Elza — is a female-driven sitcom set in the Big Apple.

All three directors are alumni of the renowned CaribbeanTales Incubator Program (CTI), which is now in its eighth year. From its inception, the CTI has been a training and development platform and launch pad for over eighty Caribbean-themed projects and producers. And since last year, the CTI has partnered with Flow to produce three (3) original series Pilots a year and develop homegrown content for Caribbean audiences.

“We are rewriting the script on support for local and regional content,” said John Reid, CEO of Cable & Wireless, operator of Flow and lead sponsor of the CTFF and CTI. “The Caribbean has always had talented filmmakers; what it has lacked is a support system that enables skills development, assistance in production and distribution, and ultimately the opportunity to monetize content. Through our partnership with CaribbeanTales, we are changing this, helping to transform the Caribbean film industry and showcase its talent to the world,” he said.

BattleDream Chronicles made its world debut on September 6, 2017 at the Gala Opening of CTFF2017, featuring legendary St. Lucian actor, Joseph Marcell, best known for his role as Geoffrey the Butler in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air; Barbadian Queen of Soca, artiste Alison Hinds; Sheldon Shepherd, star of the award-winning 2010 Jamaican drama, Better Mus’ Come; Leonie Forbes, Jamaica’s multi-award-winning actress and icon; Nickolai Salcedo, prominent Trinidadian actor and musician; and Guyana’s up-and-coming star, Nuriyyih Gerrard, in the show’s leading role.

HEAT will be screened on September 13 at the CTFF 2017 special Menelik Shabazz Tribute, sponsored by the Consulate General of Barbados, Toronto. The evening’s special guests will include Menelik Shabazz, and TIFF’s Artistic Director, Cameron Bailey.

And, on September 20, 2017 at CTFF2017’s CINEFAM: Women Creators of Colour Night, the spotlight will shine on women of colour directors, creators and actresses with the screening of CaribbeanGrlNYC.

French Journalist Notes Unique Similarities Between Jamaican Greats – Monty Alexander & Usain Bolt

…. As Alexander Gears Up For Six-City Tour

Grammy Nominated Legendary Jamaican Jazz Great Monty Alexander.

Grammy Nominated Legendary Jamaican Jazz Great Monty Alexander.

CaribPR Wire, NEW YORK, NY, Weds. Aug. 16, 2017: A French journalist’s comparison of the fluidity of the strides of recently retired Jamaican Olympic legend Usain Bolt to the agile hands of Grammy-nominated, Jamaican jazz great, Monty Alexander, on a piano, has left the virtuoso speechless.

Alexander said he was shocked recently, when while reading journalist David Gakunzi’s piece, ‘Bolt: La course manqué,’ he realized the writer had compared his hands, furiously playing one of his classics, ‘Take The A Train,’ to the strides of the world’s greatest athlete.

“To conquer the sky once more … his steps as fluid as the agile hands of Monty Alexander revisiting ‘Take the A train’ on a furious piano, marking history one last time,” Gakunzi wrote in French in his August 14, 2017 piece in La Regle Du Jeu.

“It is definitely a unique comparison,” Alexander commented recently. “I never thought of it that way but I know for me, similarly to Usain Bolt, I want to help to bring more good will and see Jamaica rise to its highest potential wherever I go.”

Alexander, who has been presented with the Commander In The Order Of Distinction for outstanding services to his homeland as a worldwide music ambassador, is set for a six-city tour across the US, beginning tomorrow, August 17th.

The one-of-a-kind musician will play the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 17, 2017. Tickets for this one-time performance are $43.50 – $48.50 and can be purchased here.

On Friday, August 18th, Alexander will play one show only at the Smith Center in Las Vegas from 7 p.m. Tickets are $39 – $59 and can be purchased here. On Saturday, August 19th, the man widely known as an upper echelon master of the swinging piano trio function, will travel to California for three performances. On Saturday night at 5 and 8 p.m., respectively, he will play the Lesher Theatre. Tickets are on sale now and can be bought here.

On Sunday August 20th, Alexander will play a sold-out matinee show at Jazz at Filoli in Woodwide, CA and on Monday, August 21st, the top pianist will play the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in n Santa Cruz, CA from 7 p.m. Tickets are $30-35 and can be purchased here.

Alexander will wrap up his six-city performance with back-to-back shows at Dazzle’s Jazz in Denver, CO from Tuesday August 22nd to Wednesday, Aug. 23rd. Showtime nightly is 8:30 p.m. and tickets from $20 – $45 can be obtained here now.
